KRQE: Santa Fe man bikes 1500 miles for mothers and babies

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – A New Mexico man is now six days into a 1,500 mile bike trip. It’s all for a good cause in order to raise money in honor of his late wife.

“I’m sure my beloved joy will be looking down and saying thank you,” said Reverend Duncan Lanum.

While 77 year old Reverend Lanum typically spends his Sunday mornings preaching to his congregation at St. Thomas Apostle Anglican Church in Santa Fe.

For the next month, Reverend Lanum will be spending his time biking almost 1,500 miles across five states all to raise awareness for the organization, “Many Mothers.”

His late wife Joy volunteered at the non-profit for nearly 16 years. In her honor, he’s packing up and riding, hoping to inspire others to donate to the “Joy Rose Lanum Memorial Fund.” That is money that will help support mothers and babies in New Mexico.

“I know how much she loved babies and mothers and so if there was anything I could do to possibly generate some contributions to that fund, I know how pleased she would be and I would be,” said Reverend Lanum.

This isn’t his first time trekking across America. Lanum biked from his church in California to the east coast 17 years ago.

Now he’s at it again. On Saturday, Lanum hit the pavement with his 18 speed. He’ll cycle from Santa Fe to Atlanta, Georgia. It’s a trip he hopes to accomplish in two-to-three weeks.

“The plan is usually to stop at night find an inexpensive place to sleep, spend the night, get a good rest, and start the next morning again,” said Reverend Lanum.

Nancy Guthrie with Many Mothers says the money raised through the GoFundMe page set up for Reverend Lanum’s trek will go directly to provide support to new families in the community.

It’ll be used for everything from diapers and formula to car seats and child care.

“Hopefully not only will this ride generate some monies for this fund but also publicize Many Mothers because it’s a marvelous organization. I don’t think many are aware of it,” said Reverend Lanum.

As of Friday morning, the “Joy Ride for Mothers and Babies” GoFundMe page has raised $1,250. They’re hoping to raise $10,000 by the time they stop collecting donations in August when Lanum returns home from his trip.

As of last check, Lanum’s most recent stop was in Amarillo, Texas
